The land granted to Rollo was given in full ownership (in alodo et in fundo) in order to emphasise that, from the very beginning, the Norman rulers were remarkably independent of the French kings. Dudo's colourful account includes a story about Rollo's refusal to bend his knee before King Charles. Instead, one of the soldiers was delegated to take part in the ceremony, and in his attempt to kiss the king's foot without bending down he sent the Frankish monarch tumbling back- wards. Dudo does, however, admit that both Rollo and his son, William Longsword, did homage to the Frankish king. He records that Rollo was given Charles' daughter Gisela in mar- riage, a story not substantiated by any other source. William Longsword is officially one of the coolest names in history. :funny.co
