Plasma Based Life 99.9 percent of the matter in our universe is plasma (not including dark matter or dark energy), despite its abundance it was thought to be unable to comprise organisms until now. Physicists created blobs of plasma using two electrodes and argon plasma, when sparked, an arc of plasma was formed which spontaneously organized into spheres. These spheres had two layers (like a cell membrane) the outside of negatively charged electrons, and an inner layer of positive ions and a nucleus of gas atoms. These spheres were able to grow from a few micrometers to three centimeters. Not only could the spheres grow, but they could also split and "metabolize" by taking in neutral argon atoms and ionizing them to replenish its layers. They could also communicate by emitting electromagnetic radiation, causing other blobs to vibrate at specific frequencies. The researchers from this 2003 experiment gelieve the first cells on earth may have been plasma based cells created in the more frequent electric storms of past earth.
