In 2010, Gene Cranick watched his house burn with his pets inside. In Obion County, Tennessee, they have no local fire department so instead they have to pay a $75 fee to get services from the nearby town. Gene's house caught fire so he dial'd for the fire department but was told that he hadn't paid his bill. He offered all his money but they refused saying it was past due. The fire spread, catching his neighbors house who had paid his bill, leading to a speedy response. The fire department arrived and only sprayed his neighbors house, they sat and watched as his house burned to the ground, killing all his pets inside.
